Our placid village also has to contend with other forms of ambiguity. From time to time, I’ve heard reports (which I have been unable to confirm) that certain busybodies around the country find the “slow children” and “slow school” signs, a common sight, to be offensive because they suggest laziness or mental deficiency on the part of the children. I don’t know if our town has had to deal with such complaints, but there is one intersection that allows you to have it both ways. Here’s a classic “slow sign”:
Meanwhile, if you don’t want the temporary police to get on your case, you might want to take down those “slow children” signs altogether – apparently they don’t do much good in the first place.
