"Where are you from?" This is not an easy question for me to answer.
As a result of my father's posting to the US embassy in New Delhi, I was born in India. I grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and various parts of the United States. I studied linguistics and Slavic languages at universities in the USA, Scotland and England (Chicago, St. Andrews, and Oxford respectively), and have spent much study and travel time in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as living there (Prague, Moscow) for several years. Currently I live in charming and bucolic Lake Bluff, Illinois, a few minutes' walk from Lake Michigan and an hour's train ride to downtown Chicago.
Thus, circumstances have made me something of a nomad. This means I am able to bring an international perspective to a wide range of assignments - something to consider if your projects involve marketing, selling or communicating abroad.
Also, nomads are good at adapting to new situations. This means that my range of activity has been very wide. I've written about such diverse subjects as the Czech beer industry, New Urbanism in America, and minority languages in Russia; created a style manual for a leading law firm; and taught foreign students at Harvard Business School how to present their arguments in idiomatic English. Such jobs required me to master new facts and situations quickly. This kind of adaptability makes me ideal for a wide range of writing assignments.
If you'd like to discuss a project that makes use of my skills, feel free to get in touch with me at either [email protected] or [email protected].
