Words trip me up here. Yes, April is still a transitional month. But this year, the transition has been anything but smooth. This latest snowstorm was preceded by a couple of short-sleeve weather days, which were preceded by another snowstorm. When I took the above photo, I still had traces of a sunburn, acquired a few days ago in that very location. It’s a transition – I hope – but it’s not the kind of transition I’m used to.
So – words can remain correct while failing to convey the underlying reality in sufficient detail. It’s the same with rich and poor countries, safe and dangerous jobs, affordable towns, authentic cuisine and reliable transport. Slapping a single adjective onto a complex situation can be misleading. Still, if you want to visit, April’s not a bad time. After all, it’s a transitional month.
